Charitable Support | Carlisle Support Services

At Carlisle Support Services we believe that whenever we can, we should provide support to charitable activities. With so many worthwhile causes and excellent charities to choose from, it is necessary to take a structured approach to providing support. Each year we select two charities, one of which does the majority of its work in the UK, and the other of which will be largely involved in the Third World. During the year our charitable support will be dedicated to the two charities we have selected. We select the charities with the involvement of our staff, and so we also encourage our staff to focus their own fund raising activities on our selection.

For 2011/12 our selected charities are:

Children with Cancer UK

(formerly Children with Leukaemia)

In November 1986, Paul O’Gorman was diagnosed with leukaemia. He died just nine weeks later. He was fourteen years old. Less than a year after losing their son, Eddie and Marion O’Gorman lost their daughter Jean, also to cancer.

Before his death, Paul’s parents promised to help other children with leukaemia, so no other child would have their life cut short by this dreadful disease.

Children with Leukaemia was founded as a result and on 12 May 2011 it became known as Children with Cancer UK,

The charity funds high quality research aimed at developing improved treatments that are not only more effective but are also less debilitating and disruptive to children's lives. It also funds research into the causes of the disease, with the ultimate aim of being able to prevent the development of childhood leukaemia and other cancers.

WaterAid

Imagine a world without toilets or taps. Where would you get your water? How would you know it was safe to drink? And, where would you go to the toilet?

That is a reality for billions of people in the developing world.

1.1 billion people don’t have access to clean, safe water - this is roughly one sixth of the world’s population.

2.6 billion people don’t have anywhere safe and hygienic to go to the toilet - this is roughly two fifths of the world’s population.

A child dies every 15 seconds from water related diseases. That is 5,760 every day or the equivalent of 20 jumbo jets full of children crashing every day.

WaterAid is an international non-governmental organisation. Our mission is to transform lives by improving access to safe water, hygiene and sanitation in the world's poorest communities.

WaterAid enables the world’s poorest people to gain access to safe water and sanitation. Together with improved hygiene, these basic human rights underpin health, education and livelihoods, forming the first, essential step in overcoming poverty. The charity works with local partners, who understand local issues, and provide them with the skills and support to help communities set up and manage practical and sustainable projects that meet their real needs. They also work locally and internationally to change policy and practice and ensure water, hygiene and sanitation’s vital role in reducing poverty is recognised.

WaterAid currently works in 26 of the world's poorest countries in Africa, Asia and the Pacific region. These countries are Angola, Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Ghana, Lesotho, Liberia, Kenya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mozambique, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia in Africa; Bangladesh, India, Nepal and Pakistan in Asia. In addition, WaterAid in Australia has three country programmes in Laos, Papua New Guinea and Timor-Leste in the Pacific region.
