  • More than 50 employees put on their walking boots and challenged themselves to walk up to 8 miles
  • 14 employees put on their thinking caps and took on the ultimate quiz challenge

Thursday 18 July saw 72 Carlisle employees come together at Cheltenham Racecourse, a CSS client, with one goal in mind, to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Society.

Dementia is the UK’s biggest killer. Someone develops it every three minutes and there’s currently no cure. The Alzheimer’s Society is a charity close to many of our hearts and is the only UK charity that campaigns for change, funds research to find a cure and supports people living with dementia today.

The day began with a Management Conference to provide everybody with a business update at the half year mark. After a bite to eat everybody gathered in the Quevegas area at Cheltenham Racecourse ready to take on their challenges.

Catherine Hargreaves from the Alzheimer’s Society joined us to talk about the charity and the great work that the money raised goes towards and then it was on to a short warm up. Dave Coard from Boxfit gave up his time to get everyone warmed up and in good spirits ready for the challenging walk ahead.

After a motivational warm up, all 51 walkers were in good spirits and ready to take on the challenge

Around 1.30pm they all set off on their journey, with roughly 11 people taking on the 2.5 miles, 12 people walking 5 miles and the remaining 28 people taking on the 8 mile walk, which involved a beast of a hill! The 8 milers were rewarded with an amazing view of the countryside at the top.

Meanwhile back at Cheltenham Racecourse 14 employees began a challenge of the mind. Quiz Master Colin Williams put them through their paces with a total of 90 questions, along with a few Dingbat rounds and a creative challenge!

Questions ranged from music, where people had to name the intro, to an Alzheimer’s related section and a creative challenge which involved building a famous landmark out of only foil!

After some challenging questions and a lot of head scratching The A Team were named the winners, which consisted of Martin Woollam, Jenny Hegarty, Sarah Namale and Esther Opiyo.

As the quiz was coming to an end our Walkers started to arrive back just in time for a well-deserved drink and a BBQ so that everybody could refuel before their journey home.

We are incredibly proud of the effort that everybody at Carlisle Support Services put in to this great fundraising day. Whether it was physically or mentally challenging, everybody put themselves to the test in the name of raising money for charity and truly showing that we “care passionately for all” at Carlisle Support Services. A huge thank you and well done needs to be given to Jamie Hatfield, Sector Director, who instigated the company wide initiative and spearheaded the day.

So far we have raised a total of £2710.99, a figure that we are very proud of, but we would love to hit £3000. That’s just £289.01 left to raise, if you have a spare couple of pound, please visit our Just Giving page and help us to hit our £3000 target.
