Adrian White’s Leadership Setting High Standards for Modern Resilience and Human Depth Behind High Performing Teams at Carlisle

Adrian White grew up between two very different worlds. He remembers being the academically driven child living in the posher end of town, part of a comfortable family that seemed pretty set for life. Then life cracked open; his parents separated, his father suffered a life changing accident, and the family home was lost. One day he was packing for school; the next he was watching bailiffs remove furniture and moving to a council estate with his mother and sibling, trying to piece together a life that no longer resembled his own.

“It was a real shock to the system” he recalls. It was a massive shift from safety into survival for the child who had to act older than his age to pull the household together.

“You go from having everything to nothing, and you just have to keep going,” he says. “I promised myself my kids would never go through what I experienced and so, I decided I’d work as hard as I possibly could, no matter what.”

That promise became the thread that pulled him through the rest of his life. It shaped the leader he is today, and the man so many across Carlisle known simply as Adrian  – calm, intuitive, hard-working, grounded and always able to see the world from more than one perspective.

“Once you’ve lived through that kind of shift, you learn perspective. You learn not to let things take you over.”

His early working life was a mixture of graft, hotel rooms, late nights and learning by doing. He travelled in teams opening retail stores across the country, living on little sleep and even less structure. But the determination that was born in his childhood was quiet strengthening. He still laughs about the first incentive scheme he ever joined – competing against colleagues to win small monthly prizes by putting in just a little extra effort. Nobody else was bothered. But Adrian did, every single time!

He carried that energy with him into leadership, rising through retail operations, recruitment, events and eventually security. At one point, he found himself leading on a difficult decision of making people redundant during a recession, for the greater good, but people he had grown the business with. Later, he stepped away completely to become self-employed to regain balance and reconnect with his children. He even helped a school out of special measures as a volunteer governor.

“That time reminded me that you don’t need a title to make a difference. You just need to care enough to get involved and leverage the passion of those around you’’

That humour – never sharp, always self-aware – colours much of his story. And later completed his MBA to discover that he is emotionally intelligent and well-liked. Leadership, for Adrian, has always been about understanding people before processes. He can read someone in minutes and adapts instinctively. He carries an innate ability to adapt, that he calls ‘switching modes,’ something he does to support each person differently.

“You can’t treat everyone the same. You’ll never get the best out of them. You have to see who they are, not who you expect them to be.”

Returning to Carlisle marked the beginning of a chapter defined by rebuilding, culture, and connection. He is known for his calmness, strategic clarity, and ability to bring people with him – not through pressure, but through presence. The pandemic deepened his role – he spoke to clients weekly, guided teams through uncertainty, and learnt how deeply loneliness and fear affected frontline workers. “Covid taught me more about people than any course ever could. It gave me a level of insight I’ll carry for the rest of my career.”

Adrian’s time at Carlisle has been marked by significant transformation, growth and a level of stability built through both challenge and change. He oversees complex operations across Security, Cleaning, FM and Events, major driver of Y-O-Y growth and team capabilities across the UK. He has supported many individuals to step into bigger roles and carry the business forward is, in his words, “the moment you realise why you do what you do.”

Asked what success looks like now, he speaks, “If my team grows, if they become stronger, more confident – that’s success. Their success is my success.”

Away from the demands of operations, Adrian’s world softens. He revealed, “Sam and my 4 daughters drive me to do what I do and are really supportive of the stresses and strains of my career and Sam is a great sounding board when I need it. Our family holiday is really important to us, as one of my daughters said, ‘For those 2 weeks we get our Dad to ourselves. ’” Adrian and his wife fostered several children and ultimately adopted their youngest daughter, a little girl they carried out of hospital in their arms as though she had always been theirs. “We walked out holding her like a newborn. She changed everything for us. She made us better people.”

Interestingly, Adrian owns one of the largest collections of Manchester United team and player autographs one could imagine, a hobby that began in his childhood has quietly grown over the years and alongside side he continues to pursue his love of Indie music and continues to follow a band he has seen well over fifty times.

His life is filled with grounding moments like running, gym, music, long-standing friendships, and trips with them to North Wales where he and his friends “act eighteen again,” and the affectionate teasing from his daughters whenever he is pictured giving out an award.

“They keep me firmly on the floor,” he admits.

Looking ahead, Adrian is focused on driving innovation across the business and supporting the implementation of the National Skills Academy, an area he believes will transform the industry’s future. He is proud of Carlisle’s 98% client retention rate and sees it as evidence of trust built through consistency and care. His ambition is to continue strengthening Carlisle and ensures the next phase of growth is shaped by capability, learning and long-term partnership. He hopes one day to step into a CEO role to shape directions at the highest level.

And when asked what he would tell his younger self, his answer carries the weight of everything he has lived through.

“Don’t let things consume you. You can still care, still be a good person, still connect deeply with people. But don’t let anything take you over. Once you master that, you can do anything.”

Adrian’s leadership is defined by the moments that demand strength, compassion, and courage. With humour, empathy, and the quiet determination – he leads!
