The ground vibrates as a physical manifestation of 65,000 heartbeats synchronising with the thundering hooves of forty thoroughbreds charging toward the first flight at Cheltenham racecourse in March 2026. At the center of these voices stood over 150 security officers on ground, an army of care deployed to guard the very soul of the Cheltenham Festival. This was our largest deployment of the year, a 100% in-house operation that proved once and for all that when you own the training, you own the results. We stood as a protective circle for over 230,000 fans across four legendary days, protecting an empire of sport where the stakes are as high as the hurdles.
This was the 2026 Cheltenham Festival, and the atmosphere was a tidal wave of adrenaline, royal presence, and raw history. From the moment the gates swung open on day one, we drew a line in the sand with no subcontractors, no strangers in high-vis, and no dilution of the Carlisle standard. Every man and woman on that grass was a member of our Carlisle family, carrying the weight of our reputation and the safety of every guest, from the racing faithful to celebrities and members of the Royal Family.
Modern Resilience in the Rain
Leadership belongs on the ground, standing in the rain and feeling the same wind as the team, which is exactly why Adrian White and Simon Pratt remained immersed in the concourse chaos alongside the crew. Adrian, reflecting on the depth behind high-performing teams, expressed that “leadership is not about sitting in a comfortable office while your team is out in the elements; it’s all about understanding the human depth behind the high-vis vest.” He believes that setting high standards is a choice made every morning, knowing that the person at the gate is equipped not just with a radio, but with the confidence of a leader.
“Modern resilience is born from human depth, not just protocols. When you have teams who move as a family rather than a collection of employee numbers, you deliver a soul to the event.” Adrian added.
“We are building a high-performing team that does not just react to chaos but anticipates it through shared values.”
“My role was to ensure every one of those 150 individuals knew they had the full weight of Carlisle’s leadership standing right there in the mud with them.”
Our in-house delivery model ensures that every detail is seamless, our teams are well equipped with everything needed to handle the surge of 67,000 daily patrons. Simon Pratt watched the week unfold with immense pride, saying, “This is undoubtedly our best one yet. Everything is spot on, from the intricate wayfinding to the critical safety protocols.”
“The complexity of a 67,000-person daily footfall leaves no room for error.” he mentioned.
For Simon, we have moved past the old industry standard of simply filling shifts to provide a premium experience where professionalism and genuine care are inseparable. “I felt an immense surge of pride watching over 150 people act as the face of Carlisle. This in-house delivery allows us to maintain a level of care that is inseparable from the job itself. It is the smile at the turnstile and the precision at the rails for me.” he mentioned. “Every member of this team was an ambassador, and they delivered with total, unwavering engagement.”
Fuelling the Spirit of Care
The determination of our team matched the prestige of the event, but that sharp edge was maintained through a culture that prioritises the person over the process. We understand that a steward cannot be expected to care for a guest if the company has not first cared for that person. Leah Fraser, Talent Acquisition Manager, Security and Events (North) see this deployment and recruiting right talent as a living commitment to our ‘People First’ promise.
“We are not here to talk about the logistics of the staff food arrangements rather the psychology of support,” detailed Simon. “When our team sees we have meticulously planned for their hydration and nutrition, it sends a clear message: You are valued!”
By removing the stress of the ‘basics’ through 150 daily packed lunches, we empower our people to focus entirely on the fans.“Carlisle invests in a culture that sustains our crew through the most gruelling shifts.” he mentioned.
Charles Tackie, Head of Operations Events (South) moved through the enclosures with a focus on the human spirit. “Whether it was managing the flow around the parade ring or assisting celebrities or the Royal Family, our duty always remained grounded in empathy.”
He affirmed, “We are not just here for security and protocols but to ensure every guest’s problem is resolved and they leave with a smile.” Ryan Griffiths, Events Operations and Security Manager, and the security officers on the rails felt this ownership in every interaction. One of the officers, stationed at the Winner’s Enclosure, shared: “When those horses come back in and the crowd is pressing forward, you feel the heat of the race. But because we are all Carlisle, we don’t even have to speak to know who is covering who. We have each other’s backs because we aren’t just temporary staff; we are one unit!”
Ryan echoed this, sharing that, “there is a quiet pride in an in-house deployment. You look to your left and right and you see people you have trained with. We take ownership because we are not just filling a quota. We are a shield that does not break because we are built on mutual trust.”
One of our veteran officers, who has worked the festival for years, put it best, “Standing at the rails when the Cheltenham Roar goes up is a sensory overload, but my focus never wavers from the crowd.”
“I have worked for plenty of firms where you feel like a ghost in a yellow vest, but here, I am an asset. When you are looking into a crowd of thousands, that confidence matters. We are not just watching for trouble but looking for opportunities to help.”
“Whether it’s a lost child or a guest who has had a bit too much celebration, we handle it as a family. That is the difference between being a guard and being a Carlisle officer.” they added.
The Carlisle and Jockey Club Alliance
These massive operations were anchored by a deep, meaningful partnership with The Jockey Club, a relationship built on a shared vision to protect the prestige of the ‘Home of Jump Racing’ while elevating the visitor experience to world-class heights. We moved away from the shattered subcontracting models toward a unified, self-delivered future to work hand in hand to preserve the legacy of the Cheltenham racecourse and the Jockey Club. Together, we are redefining what racecourse safety looks like by combining historic tradition with the modern resilience of a team that stands shoulder to shoulder.
Charles Tackie detailed that this synergy is the secret to the guest experience, “The Jockey Club provides the home, and we provide the heartbeat. We are two teams acting as one for the love of the sport.”
The horizon of excellence
While Cheltenham 2026 stands as a monumental success, it is merely a heartbeat in the broader rhythm of Carlisle Support Services’ capabilities.
This deployment proved that our in-house model is scalable and superior. As we look towards even larger-scale deployments and high-stakes infrastructure, stadia on the horizon, we do so with the confidence of a battle-tested army.
Our Carlisle family is ready to take this level of grit and care to the world’s most demanding arenas, proving that whether the crowd is 60,000 or 160,000, the Carlisle standard remains unshakeable. Carlisle is here engineering the future of safety, one high-performing team at a time.
Simon Pratt is now focusing on the next evolution, “We are already eyeing the next massive deployment with the same precision we brought to March. Our capability is about the fact that we can replicate this standard of excellence anywhere, at any scale, because we own the talent and the training.”
“The bigger the event, the better we perform,” he said proudly.
Adrian concluded, “If we can maintain 100% in-house integrity for over 230,000 people at the home of jump racing, there is no ceiling to our operational reach. We are exporting a blueprint for high-stakes resilience.”
“By taking this level of dedication to the peak of global event delivery, we are ensuring the Carlisle standard becomes the industry’s definitive benchmark.”
