Paul Brewer’s Remarkable Forty-year Journey and Lifetime Legacy on the Railway

On a late summer morning in 1985, an eighteen-year-old Paul Brewer walked into Manchester Victoria station with nerves in his stomach and ambition in his heart. He had just been accepted onto the driver’s second man course. “I vividly remember my first day,” Paul says.

“Being inducted in the offices, the lift which had an operator, and then being ushered into a classroom with other new trainees. Walking into the messroom for the first time was daunting, with all eyes on me but in time, it became the norm, and I got to know everyone.”

That day marked the beginning of a career that has spanned four decades.

This summer, Paul marked 40 years of change, challenge, and camaraderie. From his first day as a teenager to his current role as Head of Operations at Carlisle, carrying with him not just his own journey but also a family legacy that reaches back more than a century.

The railway was written into Paul’s story long before he set foot on Platform 11 at Manchester Victoria. His great-great-grandfather Alfred wore the uniform of a railwayman in the 1800s. His grandfather, Jack Brewer, drove steam locomotives before taking the controls of the legendary Brighton Belle. His father began as a fireman on steam trains, later became a driver at Fratton, and eventually Station Manager at Manchester Piccadilly. “My dad died in service in 1989,” Paul recalls. “He gave his life to the railway.”

Even Paul’s siblings found their calling on the rails, his sister Sharon built a career in employee relations, recruitment, and health and safety. His brother moved from being a car mechanic into operations, ending his time as a driver manager. For the Brewer family, rail has never been a job but a way of life.

Despite his family’s deep roots, Paul once imagined a different path. He studied computer electronics at school before going to college, amongst this, his father suggested if he’d want to consider the railway.

“I’d seen that it had given him a rewarding career and had great benefits. As he’d stayed in the industry for so long, I figured it must be a good career.”

Paul qualified as a driver in 1989, he quickly built a reputation for reliability, calm under pressure and moved through roles in supervision, operations, and leadership. “As a traincrew supervisor it felt like playing chess,” he remembers. At Virgin Trains he had the chance to meet Richard Branson along the way. “He was a very pleasant and genuine individual, always interested in how things were going with the company and his staff. My time at Virgin played a huge part in making me the person I am today.”

His career later took him to Grand Central and then to London Overground where he managed services during the Olympics, Notting Hill Carnival, and countless marathons – some moments where the railway became the beating heart of a city.

Not all days were bright. Paul faced the toughest tests in rail, including the Ladbroke Grove and Grayrigg tragedies. “Those experiences have taught me a lot about processes and the competencies of staff. Fortunately, such incidents are rare, but they are times I will never forget.”  Additionally, it gave him lessons in resilience, process, and above all, the responsibility of safety.

Ask Paul what he remembers most, and it’s not just the trains. He recalls friendships, laughter, and a sense of community that has carried him through the years.

“The railway is about family,” he says. “It’s the laughs, the tears, the friendships. It’s the culture we must never lose.” That sense of belonging has carried him through long nights, hectic schedules, and moments of pride as teams pulled together to keep Britain moving.

He also treasures the small details: “As a driver I still remember the numbers of some of the trains I drove. The last I drove before leaving the driver grade was 47465 Minerva. The Class 50 50031 Hood seemed to be my regular loco, and 390010 was the first Pendolino I drove as a driver manager for Virgin. I always have a smile when I see it still travelling around the network.”

Forty years on, Paul Brewer remains as enthusiastic as ever about the industry’s future. He encourages young people to see rail as a rewarding career, urging them to embrace learning, stay disciplined, and never lose focus on safety. He’s especially keen to see more women and people from diverse backgrounds join the railway family.

“I’d like to see more women viewing rail as an option. The industry is making changes, but there needs to be greater accommodation around flexible working and inclusion.”

“Rail is a fantastic industry to work in. It is going through huge changes, but it can provide an amazing career for anyone who wants it.

He also shares the advice that has carried him for forty years. “My dad told me in 1985, do your job and keep your nose clean. That message has served me well.”

As Paul marks 40 years in rail, his story reminds us that while technology and times change, the values of dedication, resilience, and friendships endure. His journey is not only a personal milestone but a celebration of the railway itself as an industry that never sleeps, and a family that continues to keep it moving forward.

“Time has flown by, and I’ve met amazing people who have supported me throughout my career and the tough times, and for that I am eternally grateful. The family feeling still exists, and it is a culture we must never lose.”

Paul’s remarkable career and family legacy have been captured in an exclusive interview with RailStaff Magazine. Read the full story here to explore further about his journey, insights, and passion for keeping the railway spirit alive.
