Every day, people around us may be carrying struggles we cannot see. Pressures from work, family, finances, or simply the weight of everyday life can feel overwhelming. Too often, these battles are faced in silence.
But there’s power in a single question, ‘How are you, really?’
We don’t need to wait for a crisis to ask, but in a quiet moment – during a break, over a coffee, in a glance. A simple conversation can make all the difference. Asking how someone is, truly listening, and being present are powerful ways to show support.
At Carlisle, we appreciate these small acts of care, whether in the workplace, at home or out in the community. We’ve seen how simple gestures can pierce the silence, open hearts, and begin the healing journey. These conversations create safe spaces where people are able to share what they’re going through, openly.
The data reminds us how critical openness and care can be; NHS England’s 2023 Adult Psychiatric Morbidity Survey reveals that there have been about 11.4 deaths per 100,000 people. Similarly, ONS 2024 data reflects that there were 6,069 suicides registered in England and Wales in 2023, the highest rate since 1999.
We don’t want to reduce lives to numbers. Every statistic represents a story cut short. This World Suicide Prevention Day, we stand with the 2025 theme, ‘Changing the Narrative on Suicide’, which encourages us all to move from stigma and isolation to openness, empathy, support, and hope.
We believe that change begins with connections and commitment. To play our part, we are sponsoring the ‘Creating Hope Through Action’ Conference to be held today on World Suicide Prevention Day, organised by the Consortium for the Prevention of Suicide (CPS). This event brings together leaders, organisations and advocates to share knowledge, boost awareness for mental health and suicide prevention and explore solutions to the rising issue. Our senior stakeholders in attendance will ensure that our voice is a part of the discussion for a meaningful change. Additionally, it will provide an opportunity for security officers to speak their minds. Needless to say, that we are always ready to align with organisations who share our belief that no one should carry their struggles alone.
We’ve also built support into the fabric of our workplace by actively engaging in candid conversations, support, and nurturing a culture of care. We want our teams to feel confident in challenging situations and knowing how to deal with vulnerabilities at work and beyond. We also understand that support doesn’t start and end with mere conversations. That’s why we offer all our employees and their immediate family access to Health Assured, a confidential 24/7 service that offers counselling, wellbeing support, financial advice, and more via phone, app, video call – you name it. Because help matters most when it’s within reach.
Let’s ask the hard question, listen with intention, and respond with kindness. Because sometimes, the smallest gesture – a pause, a check-in, a caring word can be the beginning of hope. Carlisle is committed to fostering an environment where compassion, awareness, and care are part of who we are. So, let us pause, reflect, and remember that by listening, supporting, and caring, we can make a big difference.
