A heartwarming story of Mohammed Jahed Miah speaking of courage and power of opportunity.
“If you had told me 10 years ago that I’d one day be an Operations Manager, I probably wouldn’t have believed you. My journey hasn’t been traditional, and it definitely hasn’t been easy, but it’s been mine. And I’m incredibly proud of it.”
Jahed began like many others in the industry bringing an SIA badge, a strong work ethic, and a willingness to say yes to every opportunity that came his way. He built his experience on the front lines, working at major events like the Commonwealth Games in Scotland, music festivals, football stadiums, and nightclub doors. Back then, it was about proving himself, showing up, and doing the job well.
As he moved into retail security, at places like Matalan and Tesco, his understanding deepened. “I learned how to deliver great customer service, how to prevent revenue loss, how to stay calm in high-pressure environments. I was learning without even realising it.” These were the skills that would later prove essential as his responsibilities grew.
There was a major turning point in his life when he became a Mall Security Officer. He now carried broader responsibilities ranging from opening and closing the site, managing the safety of staff and the public, and supporting well-known brands like Apple, JD Sports, Footasylum, and Zara. That’s when something shifted. He no longer saw himself as just security personnel. “I started to see myself as a leader.”
“I was dreaming big and then the pandemic hit.”
Right in the middle of COVID-19, he joined Carlisle Support Services as a Mobile Support Officer in Manchester. “It was a tough time for the world and for the security industry, but for me, it turned out to be a new beginning.”
What he didn’t know then was that Carlisle would become the place where he would truly grow. He showed up every day, worked hard, and slowly earned the trust of his managers. Then came a day he’ll never forget, receiving the UK Outstanding Officer Award from Tesco. “I was the first-ever recipient. I still remember that day so clearly. I was emotional. Not just because of the recognition, but because I finally felt seen for the work I’d put in over the years.”
That moment changed something in him. It gave him the ambition to reach higher. Within two years, he became a Mobile Support Team Leader. A year and a half later, he stepped into his current role as Operations Manager – a position he’s held for over six months. He has seen a significant shift by leading teams, making decisions, and mentoring others who now stand where he once did.
His journey has taught him about resilience, trusting the process, and believing in oneself even when the path ahead is uncertain. “I’m also lucky. Carlisle made choices that created opportunities for people like me. Removing subcontracting meant more stability and support for frontline staff. Carlisle introduced the Real Living Wage, employee benefits, and a culture where effort doesn’t go unnoticed. For someone like me, that made all the difference.”
But above all, Jahed learnt that hard work matters. People matter. And with the right support, you can go further than you ever thought possible. Because sometimes, the right company doesn’t just give you a job. It gives you the chance to believe in yourself and grow. By eliminating the use of subcontractors for over a year, Carlisle further amplified its focus on people and accelerated growth opportunities across the entirety of its operations.
