What was once an overlooked corner of Norwood Junction station has now blossomed into a sanctuary of calm, connection, and care. At one of South London’s busiest transport hubs, a new kind of space has opened its doors – one designed not for travel, but for pause. The wellbeing garden at Norwood Junction station, unveiled by Arriva Rail London (ARL), is a pioneering initiative to support mental health, strengthen community ties, and promote environmental sustainability.
The garden beautifully reflects the vision of ARL and the passion of local partners, creating a welcoming green space that brings people and nature closer.
Carlisle is proud to have helped bring this vision to life. Working closely with ARL and local partners, our teams provided the practical expertise, groundwork, infrastructure, and professional services – a complementary contribution valued at around £14,000 to support this pioneering initiative that enhances wellbeing and connection within the community.
The transformation was led by ARL’s Grace-Anne Stephenson, a train dispatcher with deep roots in the local community. It has been her effort to turn an underused area of the station to a vibrant, multi-sensory sanctuary, shaped through dedication and teamwork.
The wellbeing garden offers six unique spaces, each designed to nurture body and mind. From the edible garden that supplies fresh produce to the South Norwood Community Kitchen, to the relaxation garden with sensory plants and a gentle water fountain – the project blends community care with environmental purpose.
Visitors can brew tea in the calming tea garden, connect with nature in the global greenhouse, explore creative sound therapy in the music garden, or find support in the mental health shed.
Richard Jenkins, Managing Director for our Cleaning and Facilities Management division, mentions: “Our trusted partnership with ARL, now over a decade strong, is built on a shared commitment to innovation and community value. We’re privileged to have contributed to the groundwork and infrastructure for the new garden and cabin, a thoughtful initiative that so meaningfully supports the health and wellbeing of the local community.
“We see this as a key step towards shaping the future of urban infrastructure, where transport hubs are sustainable, connected, and truly serve the needs of a modern society.”
Carlisle is honoured to stand alongside ARL, Network Rail, Bee Friendly Trust, and the community in turning this vision into reality where the local community is invited to nurture and grow, we are proud to have helped lay its foundations. It will continue to grow and flourish in the years ahead.
