With aims at supporting new and expecting parents, Carlisle Support Services has made the decision to enhance current policies to promote better benefits for all staff.
The company recently introduced an enhanced maternity policy that will provide employees better support and flexibility, ensuring everyone’s personal circumstances can be met. Similarly, staff members will also benefit from an improved paternity offering which provides one week of full pay followed by a secondary week of statutory pay as new parents adjust to this life-changing event.
Alongside the new enhanced package, all staff will have access to adoption leave that will offer parents who have chosen to adopt the same benefits as the enhanced maternity / paternity policies.
Carlisle has also decided to introduce paid leave for miscarriage support. According to Tommy’s charity, 1 in 4 pregnancies end in a miscarriage, therefore the new policies will support employees during this difficult time and remove unnecessary pressure to return to work after such events.

On the introduction of the newly enhanced policies, Carlisle’s HR Director Suzanne Hawkins, said:
“At a time when financial well-being is so important, I am delighted to introduce an enhancement to our family-friendly policies, giving both expecting parents better paid leave as they navigate their way into parenthood. We believe that this benefit will make such a difference at a crucial stage of someone’s life.
We also appreciate that not all pregnancies go to full term. More importantly, we want our employees to know that we are here to support them when they have suffered a loss during any stage of their pregnancy. Our enhanced policies not only support staff financially but also give practical support and advice during a difficult and sad time.
We will continue to review and monitor our benefits to ensure that they are aligned with our company values, and a diverse and multigenerational workforce, to help us attract and retain great employees.”
Samantha Patching, Head of HR, Carlisle Support Services, added:
“As someone who has recently had a baby and received statutory maternity pay during this time, I know first-hand the difference the enhanced company maternity pay will have. At a time when you want to focus on your new baby and becoming a mother, it is comforting to know that your company supports you during this time.”
Events Manager, Ruth Ripley, who has advocated for these new policies has said:
“A miscarriage policy is a fundamental component of HR policies, and, surprisingly, many companies haven’t already adopted one. I have a personal investment in this policy, and one I am not afraid to share. In a previous role eighteen months ago, I experienced a miscarriage, and the absence of supportive policies made an already difficult time even harder. Just days after my loss, I found myself back at work, pressured by deadlines and the need to maintain a brave face. It was an absurd situation – I was still losing pregnancy matter while sitting at my desk, wearing what can only be described as an adult nappy. The lack of support made it very difficult to talk about, and I felt overwhelmed asking for time off, fearing I would be seen as a nuisance. In hindsight, this was ridiculous, but it is also how so many people feel who are going through the same thing.
The stigma and taboo surrounding women’s health issues often lead to their neglect in the workplace. This silence perpetuates a lack of necessary policies and support systems. By sharing my experience and advocating for change, I aimed to challenge these outdated norms. Carlisle’s decision to implement a miscarriage policy is a significant and commendable step in the right direction. It acknowledges the importance of compassionate support for employees during such challenging times and sets a precedent that I hope many other companies will follow.”
